Notified by the Centre last month, the Information Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code) Rules 2021, clubbed social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter and digital news sites like The Wire, The Print and The News Minute under the same category. The guidelines that give Executive the power to block content across platforms have been challenged in court by online news media. The clause on identifying the “first originator” of mischievous content also poses a risk to user privacy of messaging platforms like WhatsApp. A panel discussion on the impact of new rules on free speech, user privacy and business.
